⚪
Not established. Strong demand and selective constraints, but a category-wide shortage isn't confirmed. Confidence: low.
This page covers the electrical gear inside data centers, mainly medium- and low-voltage switchgear and power distribution equipment. UPS systems and backup generators are related markets, noted as adjacent.
Demand is clearly strong: Eaton's Electrical Americas backlog is up 33% and its data center revenue grew 65%. Eaton also says lead times are extended on some product lines. But we found no product-level data showing that switchgear demand exceeds what makers can produce, or that prices are rising because of scarcity rather than tariffs.
Outlook: makers are adding capacity now, led by Eaton's $1B+ across two dozen projects. Whether that's enough isn't yet clear.

What we saw
Reading
Source
Long waits
Not confirmed. Eaton says it knows "the product lines where our lead times are extended," but gives no products or figures. Contractor blogs cite long switchgear waits, but we couldn't verify them against primary data.
⚪ Unknown
Orders above supply
Not confirmed. Eaton's Electrical Americas backlog is up 33%, and its combined Electrical businesses have a rolling 12-month book-to-bill of 1.2. Orders are arriving faster than shipments, but these cover all of Eaton's electrical products, and backlog can reflect scheduled deliveries rather than a shortage.
⚪ Unknown
Prices going up
Not confirmed for switchgear. Eaton implemented price increases in Q2 and early August, including "discrete price increases as we need to," but didn't say which products. Part of it recovers tariff costs, which isn't the same as shortage pricing.
⚪ Unknown
New capacity not enough
Not established. Eaton is bringing online more than $1B of expansion across two dozen projects. No maker or tracker says this capacity will fall short.
⚪ Unknown
Score: 0 red, 0 green, 0 mixed, 4 unknown = ⚪ Not established. Fewer than two signs are confirmed either way, so we can't call this tight or easing. Confidence is low. Product-level lead times or a maker saying switchgear demand exceeds capacity would change this.

Dates to watch

Oct 28–29: Vertiv (Oct 28, expected) and Schneider Electric (Oct 29, per its financial calendar) Q3 results.
Nov 3 (expected): Eaton Q3 results. Listen for which product lines have extended lead times, and for pricing by product.
Nov 2026: buildout begins on Siemens' new low-voltage electrical components plant in Georgia.
"Expected" dates come from earnings calendars. The company hasn't announced them yet.

Background

Reference. Updated when the facts change, not every month.

What it is

Switchgear is the big cabinet of breakers and switches that routes power around a data center and cuts it off safely if something goes wrong. Think of it as the building's main fuse box, scaled up for a small town's worth of electricity.
🔗
Where it sits: Substation transformer → medium-voltage switchgear → transformers and low-voltage switchgear → UPS and power distribution → power units in each rack → servers. Backup generators connect through the switchgear too.
What this page covers: switchgear and power distribution equipment. UPS systems and backup generators are separate markets with their own makers and supply conditions, so we mention them as adjacent rather than scoring them here.
When something is short, two things happen. The seller can charge more and stays fully booked. The buyer waits. Same shortage, opposite effect on the stock.

Why could it get tight?

  • Much of it is configured per site. Switchgear is set up for each site's voltage and layout, which limits building from stock.
  • Many buyers want it at once. Data centers, battery storage, grid upgrades and new US factories all need similar gear.
  • Factories and skilled workers take time. Eaton's two dozen expansion projects are coming online in stages.

How big is the demand?

Measure (Eaton, Q2 2026)
Number and scope
Electrical Americas organic sales growth
+18% (quarter, year over year)
Electrical Americas orders
+41% (rolling 12-month average, organic). A different period and basis from quarterly sales, so the two shouldn't be compared directly.
Electrical Americas backlog
+33% from June 2025
Book-to-bill
1.2 for the combined Electrical businesses, rolling 12 months
Data center organic revenue
+65%, across Eaton's data center products
None of these is a data-center-switchgear-only measure.

Who wins, who waits

The effects below are our interpretation, not company statements.
Company
Likely effect
Why
Wins
Strong orders and backlog, data center revenue up 65%, and a 27.5% margin in Electrical Americas. Benefits from demand whether or not there's a shortage.
Schneider Electric (France: SU), Siemens (Germany: SIE), ABB (ABBN.SW)
Wins
The other global switchgear makers, selling into the same demand.
Wins
Sells UPS, power distribution and cooling for data centers. Guides to about 31% organic growth in 2026. Its "favorable price-cost" is company-wide, so it isn't switchgear pricing evidence.
⚡
FPS
,
❄️
NVT
, Powell Industries (POWL)
Wins
Smaller makers of switchgear, pre-built power rooms and power distribution gear.
Adjacent
A leading supplier of backup generators. Its Power & Energy sales grew 17%, led by data centers. That's a separate market, not switchgear evidence.
Mixed
Electrical contractors. Plenty of work, but late gear can shift project timing.
Exposed
Data center builders and GPU cloud companies. Where specific gear is late, openings slip.
The takeaway: strong electrical demand and selective supply constraints are supported. A category-wide hard shortage is not established.

When does it end, and what could replace it?

  • 2026–2027: Eaton's two dozen expansion projects come online in stages. Vertiv is accelerating its own expansion.
  • From late 2026: Siemens builds out a new low-voltage electrical components plant in Georgia, with hiring from 2027.
  • Workarounds: pre-built modular power rooms (skids) made in a factory and shipped whole, which cuts time on site.

What could go wrong for this view

  • We may be underestimating tightness. Specific data center configurations could be short even if the broad category isn't. Product-level data would show this.
  • Part of the price rise is tariffs. Higher prices that pass on tariff costs don't signal a shortage.
  • Background: Wood Mackenzie found utility-grade switchgear in surplus in 2025. That's a different market and an older period, so it doesn't settle the data center question either way.

How to read a change

🟢
Good easing
Lead times fall because new plants opened, while orders keep growing. Data centers open on time.
🔴
Bad easing
Lead times fall because order growth slowed. Eaton's book-to-bill dropping below 1 would be the first sign.
What would change our view
  • Turns tight: a maker names switchgear lines with long or rising lead times, says demand exceeds capacity, or confirms switchgear price increases beyond tariff recovery.
  • Confirms easing: makers say lead times are back to normal while orders still grow.
  • Bad easing: Eaton or Vertiv orders slow sharply.

Words used on this page
  • Switchgear: cabinets of breakers and switches that route and protect electrical power.
  • Medium voltage: roughly 1,000 to 38,000 volts. The level used to bring power into a data center.
  • Low voltage: under about 1,000 volts. Used inside buildings.
  • UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply): equipment that keeps power flowing during an outage or disturbance, using power electronics, controls and stored energy (usually batteries). How long it can carry the load depends on its design; in data centers it typically bridges the gap until generators take over.
  • T&D (Transmission and Distribution): the utility grid that carries power from plants to customers.
  • Book-to-bill: new orders divided by sales. Above 1 means orders are arriving faster than products ship.
  • Rolling 12-month: a measure covering the past 12 months, which smooths out big one-off orders.
  • Price-cost: how much price increases outrun cost increases.
  • Skid: a pre-built power room assembled in a factory and shipped to the site.
